We value Collibra as one of the best tools for cataloging, lineage tracking, and policy enforcement to ensure data integrity and security. It is a robust data governance platform. We love thier cloud offering as well. As a result, Collibra enables seamless data discovery proving to be an amazing tool for Infomation Organizaion. We would not use it as a MDM tool. You must check it's cost as well. We believe the cost is worth it if the enterprise can afford it.

Using Collibra for Effective Data Governance

Very first step is to decide how do you want to organize your Data Catalogs. We setup a community first based on a Product Line or a department or a subject area like product, customer, suppliers, etc. This is a very strategic step. It is upto you to choose which type of classification suits you the best. 

What can be expected to get out of the DG Governance setup?

Setup of a Community with Stewardship

Here is an example of the setup : We can set up your "Sales" Community, and your decision makers will be able to find out 4 items: - Who owns it - What the definitions are - Related data policies - Who to contact with questions

Setup of Business Glossaries

Catalogs of business terms will be setup which will include information like terms, business defintion, Domain Name, metrics is Certified or not, Owner's name, related assets like source table, reports, etc. Monthly sales could be a terms listed in a glossary.

Workflow setup

Collibra Workflows are automated Business Processes for mainly tracebility. For example adding a new KPI in a business glossary must go through an approval process. A requestor/business user can request for the workflow, Stewards can review it, Owner can approve it and an workflow admin can implment it.

API Integrations

We are a data engineering team. So we will integrate your Collibra platform with all your data sources and tools like ETL or reporting so that your platform runs automatically. Without this, it would be kinda costly and tedious to manage the platform. RIght?

Setup of Domains, Sub-Domains and Asset Types

Here is an example of a domain and it's sub-domains. For your community named "Sales", you could define a domain named, "Sales Business Glossary". It could have a subdomain as KPIs. You could define another Domain named "Sales Data Catalog" with subdomain ERP Tables. Asset types are type of metadata like tables, terms, etc.

Setup of Data Lineage Module

Collibra Data Lineage module will be setup to scan and report on source, target, owner of a KPI of a business glossary. For example, your Total Sales - Monthly metrics in your dashboard is coming originally from ERP, traveling to Data Warehouse and reported in PowerBI. Collibra can be setup to capture all these.

Setup of Politicies and Rules

We setup various policies like say PII must be ecrypted. We can also setup workflows to add new policis.

Dashboarding and Reporting
