H7 Technologies: the control software inside a disinfection device

H7 Technologies builds UV-C disinfection devices that combine ultraviolet light technology with artificial intelligence to protect against infectious disease, used in healthcare settings where the standard of disinfection is a patient safety matter rather than a housekeeping one. A device like that is only as good as the software deciding how it behaves in a given room.

Embedded software for the Surya2 device

ThirdEye Data designed, architected and developed the software that runs on Surya2 and manages the device’s operations.

The central requirement was that disinfection should be matched to the room rather than applied uniformly. The software lets healthcare providers apply the correct quantities of different disinfectants based on the dimensions of the space and how heavily it is occupied, which is the difference between a device that treats a small consulting room and a large ward the same way and one that does the right thing in each.

We also designed for where the product was going rather than only for where it was. The architecture anticipates extension to robotic delivery, so that capability can be added without the control software being rewritten around it. On a hardware product that distinction matters more than in software alone, because the cost of revisiting embedded software after devices are in the field is considerably higher.

This engagement is a useful counterweight to the rest of our portfolio. Not every problem worth solving is an artificial intelligence problem, and a medical device needs software that is correct, predictable and maintainable far more than it needs a model.

Related solution: product and embedded software engineering

Software that ships inside a physical product has different economics from software that runs on a server. It cannot be quietly patched every week. It has to behave predictably in conditions the team did not fully anticipate. And the architectural decisions taken at the start constrain what the product can become for years, because revisiting them once devices are with customers is expensive and sometimes impossible.

ThirdEye Data builds for that. Practically it means designing for the roadmap rather than the current specification, being conservative about complexity in the parts that cannot easily be changed, and being explicit about what the device does when something is not as expected. For a medical device that reaches into regulatory territory, we work within the client’s framework rather than around it. We build these products end to end, and we are equally willing to say when a problem does not need a model.
